Imagine: Imaging Life
Imagine is one of the University of Sheffield’s most significant and exciting research investments. This groundbreaking multimillion pound project will make Sheffield a world-leading centre for biological imaging research.
With support from funders and partners worldwide, we’re developing state-of-the-art facilities and a team of talented researchers to tackle major challenges in biology and medicine. |

Unique in the world
Our goal is not to do more of the same, but to do something very different. We will bring together three fundamentally different – but very complementary – advanced imaging techniques under one roof. This facility will be unique in the world for its combination of microscopy capabilities.
But Imagine is about more than revolutionary technologies – we want to apply these techniques to solve global issues in medicine, biology and healthcare. By combining and harnessing key advances in three microscopies – optical, electron and atomic force – we can delve deeper into the detailed architecture and cellular interactions of biological systems. |
Imaging research is critical to advances in medicine, biology, chemistry and physics. With greater understanding of cellular interactions, we can develop the next generation of therapeutics. New imaging technologies are also translating into applications in healthcare and manufacturing. |
These new imaging techniques will transform our understanding of infectious organisms such as MRSA. With this knowledge, we can develop the next generation of drugs and therapies.
